Recently, I attended a gathering of fellow watch enthusiasts and encountered a truly remarkable piece. To set the stage, these gatherings typically showcase a wide array of wristwatches, each reflecting the unique tastes of their owners. I usually leave every meet amazed by the technology, innovation, and artistry on display. However, at this particular meetup, amidst the already impressive array of timepieces, I came across something truly special: the 2021 “Sarpaneva x Moomin” Series.
Let me tell you, this watch was nothing short of stunning!

Sarpaneva Watches, also known as Sarpaneva Uhren Fabrik, S.U.F. or S.U.F. Helsinki, is a niche, independent luxury brand founded by Finnish watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva in 2003. Sarpaneva, a master watchmaker, trained at the Finnish School of Watchmaking before honing his skills at some of Switzerland’s most prestigious watchmaking houses, including Patek Philippe and Piaget. His brand is a reflection of his passion for blending the artistry of watch design with technical excellence.
Known for its distinctive and artistic approach to watchmaking, Sarpaneva combines traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde design. Stepan Sarpaneva’s philosophy revolves around creating timepieces that are more than just tools for telling time. His designs often include both subtle nods and bold cues to Finnish culture, making each piece feel like a renowned sculpture or painting—the longer you gaze, the more details you notice, each evoking an emotional response. Sarpaneva watches are designed to be wearable art, with a focus on individuality, craftsmanship, and emotional impact.
Sarpaneva watches feature both in-house movements and modified Swiss movements, offering clients a higher level of customization to match their unique tastes. 2020, “Sarpaneva x Moomin 75th Anniversary Watch”
The “Sarpaneva x Moomin” is a special edition watch created by Stepan Sarpaneva in collaboration with Moomin Characters Oy Ltd. Originally released in 2020, as a limited release of 75 pieces, the “Sarpaneva x Moomin 75th Anniversary Watch” celebrated the 75 year anniversary of the Moomin stories. It then returned in 2021 under a release named the “Sarpaneva x Moomin”. There have been other limited releases, prototypes and one-offs that have been brought to market, but the 2020 and 2021 releases are the most commonly known of this rather exclusive line. There was also a new exclusive release earlier this year (2 sets of 26 watches), in April, dubbed the “S.U.F. Helsinkin x Moomin”.
2024, “S.U.F. Helsinkin x Moomin”
The 2021 “Sarpaneva x Moomin” was released in 4 separate sets of 25 (one set for each of the different color hands available) in an extremely limited run of 100 watches. This watch is a tribute to the whimsical world of Moominvalley, blending Sarpaneva’s distinct design language with the charm of the Moomin universe. The watch prominently features iconic Moomin characters, deeply rooted in Finnish culture and beloved worldwide. The dial showcases intricate engravings, rendered in Sarpaneva’s signature style, capturing elements of the Moominvalley landscape with a blend of natural motifs and whimsical details.
The highly intricate dial of the “Sarpaneva x Moomin” is a work of art, featuring hand-engraved details that bring the Moomin characters to life. The engravings are done with extraordinary precision, making each character and element of the landscape stand out in three-dimensional relief. The dial’s party piece is that the reeds on the watch dial are hand-painted with Swiss Super-Luminova® colors arranged in varying patterns, resulting in unique and individual combinations for each piece. The result is an exceedingly captivating feature requiring nine different Swiss Super-Luminova® colors to create. It’s hypnotic, and its ethereal glow will make you want to stare at it forever.
2021, “Sarpaneva x Moomin”
The dial is a three-part construction made of hand-finished and hand-painted stainless steel, paired with a hand-finished stainless steel index ring. The hands are two-tone and available in Steel Rhodium, Flame Blue, Red Gold, or Pitch Black finishes, all featuring Swiss Super-Luminova® inlays. The variations in the hands are the primary distinguishing characteristic between the four sets in this release
The watch is housed in Sarpaneva’s distinctive Korona case, known for its unique shape and detailed finishing. The case, made of high-grade Outokumpu stainless steel from Finland (SUPRA 316L/4435), measures 46 mm long, 42 mm wide, and 11.4 mm thick. On my relatively average wrists, it wore slightly on the larger side. The case includes both front and back anti-reflective sapphire crystals, and with a 4 o’clock position screw-down crown, it’s water-resistant up to 10 ATM (100 meters or approximately 330 feet).
The movement is a Sarpaneva-modified Swiss-made Soprod A10 Calibre. It features mechanical automatic winding and presents hours and minutes, with no day/date complication. Sarpaneva presents the movement with Rhodium plating and a Perlage finish. The stainless steel rotor incorporates the “Sarpaneva Moonface”, features white gold weights and multi-color Swiss Super-Luminova® inlay in the details. This robust and beautiful movement features 25 jewels and has an 42-hour power reserve.

Given the beauty of the dial and the range of colors and textures available, this watch offers considerable freedom when choosing the perfect strap. If strap changes aren’t your thing, it comes with a 22 mm wide handmade black salmon leather strap. While the strap is undoubtedly well-crafted, supple, and comfortable, I think this watch allows for much more creativity than a simple black strap alone.
So that’s the watch, but what is Moomin, and why did a renowned designer like Stepan Sarpaneva want to commemorate it in his watches?
“The Moomins and the Great Flood” & Tove Jansson
Moomin is a cherished series created by Finnish-Swedish author Tove Jansson, featuring the Moomin family and their friends in various books, comic strips, and animated adaptations. First introduced in the 1940s, the Moomins were inspired by Jansson’s own life, Finnish folklore, and her love for nature. The stories blend whimsy with philosophical reflections, creating a world that resonates with readers of all ages. The world was introduced to the Moomins in 1945 when Söderström & Co published Jansson’s first story, “The Moomins and the Great Flood”.
The Moomin characters, including the curious and kind-hearted Moomintroll, his thoughtful father Moominpappa, nurturing mother Moominmamma, and friends like the independent Snufkin and the fiery Little My, live in the serene Moominvalley. Their adventures explore themes of friendship, family, and individuality, set against the backdrop of nature’s beauty.

The character depicted most prominently on the face of this “Sarpaneva x Moomin” is often mistaken for a hippo, but is actually Moomintroll, one of Jansson’s Moomins. The hippo comparison comes from his round, snout-like appearance, but Moomintroll and the other Moomins have distinctive features and characteristics, separate from any real animals. Despite their hippo-like appearance, Moomins are portrayed as gentle, curious creatures with rich personalities and stories in the Moomin universe.
The 2021 release of the “Sarpaneva x Moomin” was inspired by Jansson’s illustration from her 1954 book, Moominsummer Madness. In Jansson’s original artwork, Moomintroll is depicted dreaming peacefully among the reeds on a serene summer day.
Jansson’s work, often seen as children’s literature, delves into deep philosophical themes such as loneliness, love, and the search for meaning. The stories promote values of acceptance and tolerance, highlighting the diverse personalities and perspectives of the characters. The Moomins have become cultural icons around the world, particularly in Finland, Sweden, and Japan, where they have inspired various forms of media and merchandise.

Collaborations, like the Sarpaneva watch, bring the characters into the world of luxury design.
